TECS 290 students:
Please tell us about the resources you found. Make sure you your read through all the posts before adding yous. If the site has already been suggested, find another!!
I searched Google to locate two internet websites for first year teachers and actually found three websites that I thought were very informative.
TeacherFirst.com www.teachersfirst.com/newbie.cfm
This website allows teachers to speak about issues and ideas on blogs with other
teachers. There are also several links for professional organizations for teachers
to get involved with and great ideas for the classrooms that are grade and subject
specific.
U.S. Department of Education www.ed.gov/teachers/become/about/survivalguide/index.html
This website gives messages and ideas to new teachers regarding how to control
the classroom, help with working with veteran teachers, how to cope with parents
and principals. This site also gives ideas on how to improve student performance
and professional development.
ProTeacher Directory www.proteacher.com/010007.shtml
This website has a discussion board for new teachers and veteran teachers to
discuss about their what is happening in their classrooms and share ideas. There
are also several links that give help on classroom management and top teaching
strategies.
From the Trenches:
As you are researching and joining all these cool sites, you need to have user names and passwords. I know you're wise enough not to keep using the same username/password, which means you have a ton of info to keep up with.
There are many password keeper programs out there, but I like Password Corral. It's free, easy to use, and even lets you categorize your passwords!
Cool resource, thanks for sharing. The Password and Username thing seems to be huge challenge for most folks. I have a little "magic" spiral notebook where I also write them down, print out email confirmation and tape in there. Kinda silly but provides a great back-up

this is a great website that divides different lesson plans by grade level. It also has helpful information for parents who homeschool. There are TONS of interesting articles about new teaching methods and activities.

It has its own search engine for its website and even features a special page for first time teachers. This is a great website with amazing ideas, and I plan on using it in the future.
I wanted to add a couple of web-sites that I haven't seen mentioned here.
The Genetic Science Learning Center
gslc.genetics.utah.edu
This is the neatest web-site on genetics, genetic disorders, virtual lab DNA extractions, has info on cloning, stem cell research, etc. A great resourse that explains how genetics relate to our lives and society. This site has interactive learning opportunities and virtual tours from basic cell functions to how genes determine body patterns. Good stuff
Super Science fair Projects, Ideas, Topics & Experiments www.super-science-fair-projects.com
For those of you that help with science fair projects, this web-site gives complete step-by-step guide for experiments & ideas for kids K-college.
These two were very user friendly and offered a wide variety of subjects and lesson plans for the classroom teacher. It also offered many other resources which are helpful in the classroom like rubrics and worksheets. I never thought that there were this many resources available and the greatest thing is that it comes to your email on a monthly basis so you don’t have to remember where to go to find it and you will be reminded to try new ideas and get more inspiration throughout the year.
The Google Earth site that we learned about with the Google Lesson Plan assignment was awesome!! I was so surprised with how easily it all came together & how helpful it was. My husband & I were looking through Google Earth & put in where we stayed on our honeymoon in Jamaica & could see the beach...see where we stayed...see where we ate, etc. It was unreal!!!
