Teachers From the Trenches:
Do you use Quia, (www.quia.com)? If you do could you tell us what you think, if not do you have something else you use that you could recommend?
TECS290 students:
Assignment details are in Week for of Moodle.
Like everyone has said, this site is pretty amazing, and not too expensive. The extent of variety of assignments is aweing. I also enjoyed the ease of use of everything.
Quia is amazing!!! I had fun going through my own quizzes and I even knew the answers. This site is so easy to use. It shows you exactly how to build each quiz. I can't wait to use this in the classroom someday!! http://www.quia.com/instructorZone
I really enjoyed using quia. I explored and attempted to make up a variety of games and activities. The tour was VERY helpful and I can admit that if I hadn't taken the tour, I would probably still be trying to create a quiz. I could see this site being extremely helpful for teachers. Teachers at all aspects of their careers could benefit from this. Meaning, first year teachers could use this as a great tool to get them started and veteran teachers could use this as a way of changing up their lesson plans. Also, I feel it is affordable for school systems.
I enjoyed browsing around the Quia web site and tried my hand at making a couple of word searches, and of coarse looked at other activities. As others mentioned, that students and teachers alike enjoy instant results from quizzes, etc.
I used Quia in Highschool for some of my classes and I really enjoyed playing the games on the computer. Quia is a great website to help students learn and it is an easy enough website that any teacher can use for the classroom. I enjoyed making and finding activities. I had fun creating the website and pretending it was part of my own classroom. I thought it might be too difficult for me to create the website but it was pretty easy to use. http://www.quia.com/pages/elementaryedu.html
I have been aware of Quia before now only because my principal sends out all kinds of online surveys for the teachers and students using Quia. I never did think to ask if I had access to Quia because I thought it was only for surveys(and stupid ones at that). After making my own web page I now really wish our High School would get enough laptops that all of the students, even in my largest class, could each have one. The activities look to be great test study tools. I would love to be able to post due dates for assignments and upcoming tests. My only concern is the number of students who have internet, or even a computer at home. I was taken aback by the sparse number of students (less than 50% of the class) who raised their hands when I asked them who all had internet at home.
Anyway, I made and posted a couple activities and a quiz on my website. Check it out at http://www.quia.com/pages/stocktonbiology.html
Quia is a website that really will help us up and coming teachers with quizes, activities, surverys, etc. I have spent a lot of my day on www.quia.com and have had a great time seeing activites from other teachers and creating my own. If you would like to see the class I created you can go to
I really like the idea of using this website to follow my students. It is also great for the students to have the ability to go online to get some assignments done and they get their grade for those assignments when they are finished.
I thought quia could be very useful. I checked out the Cloze activities, hangman, and picture perfect. I hope I am fortunate enough to be able to use this when I am a teacher. Here is the URL for my classroom:
Here's my Quia page- http://www.quia.com/pages/hchscomp.html
My account expires on July 13, though, because I activated the trial during the TECS Podcaasting class. I am going to show this to admins and see what they think. If that doesn't work, I'm getting a subscription! This will work great for my Comp I/II classes over IDL.
Oh my goodness! I can see myself using Quia in about 1,000 different ways! In high school, my English teacher used Quia and we took alot of quizzes and tests on it, but I obviously never had the opportunity to check out the instructor zone so I had no idea the things you can do! I was blown away and ecstatic! I made hangman, several ordered lists activities, and experimented with all the different types of quizzes you can make. In my high school English class I only took multiple choice quizzes, so I thought that was all you can make but the possibilities are absolutely endless! I can make memory and concentration games, and I can make flashcards (which I did for Kindergarten level math)! There are several other games such as rags to riches, which I havent figured out yet.
I like the activities and such in Quia. I think that it could be a really useful tool. I can vision how great this would be if all of my students had adequate computer access. I can see using it more often for my Botany/Zoology class than for Biology only because my Biology textbook came with software for building quizzes, tests, etc.., but could use it as a supplement.
It is very easy to use. I like that!!
I can see myself really using this in the classroom. Especially if I become very acquainted with it and very good at maneuvering around the site. I would probably use this in the upper levels more so then in the lower levels. It might also be interesting to let the students create their own quizes and games. Thank you for showing me this site!
