Teachers from the Trenches:
Does your school have United Streaming and if so how do you make use of it in your classroom? If not what do you use?
TECS 290: After exploring United Streaming, how do you think you might use United Streaming in your own classrooms. What did you find that would be useful. Give an example. (Assignment details are in Moodle Week 4)
I've seen United Streaming in our school before but have never taken much time to explore it. I did not fully understand the volume of videos available until I explored. This seems like it would be a wonderful resource for any teacher.
Being a future Physical Education teacher, I immediately thought of this as a possibility when lack of gym availability forces a classroom day. This happens from time to time when school assemblies are held and the gym must be prepared ahead of time. With resources such as these, it seems that teachers are no longer limited by the resources in their respective school or professional libraries.
Another really cool feature I discovered was the interactive atlas on United Streaming. This is an atlas of the world in which the teacher or student can navigate to anywhere and find cool videos on Culture, History, Government, and Natural World. I clicked on the United States and Mexico and there were many informative videos on a variety of topics. This is a resource that can be applied to any grade or subject area. Very cool...
United Streaming looks like a great opportunity for schools. I love the idea of being able to download videos (especially the ones from outer space and the Jungles of the world) to your computer or have it fed directly into your classroom.
I would download the videos about outer space because just seeing a picture from a book does not do space any justice. Having the planets in motion and the true colors screaming at you , I think, would be the greatest experience, and this will be as close as many people in the world will be able to feel the awesome power I feel when I see videos of space. It lets you know how small and insignificant we all are.
I really enjoyed exploring the united streaming site. There was tons of cool audio, clipart, and videos to check out! What a great tool for teachers and schools! One thing I really liked about this site was that the pictures/videos were so real and not just created by some random person! It is amazing how many tools are out there for teacher use, both that cost and are free!
Oh-and united streaming would be a great asset to my classroom someday, because I can download audio and video and have it directly in my classroom. It would be even better to have when my class is learning about more in depth lectures. For example, space-like Laura mentioned, basic anatomy, and many other topics that are more complicated!
I found that there is no PDF file for free access to the United Streaming website now. That was for the Spring Semester only. After registering with United Streaming for the free demo, I have waited now almost six hours and still have not received an email from them with the access code for the 30 day free trial. I hope they get it to me soon!
Wow! What a great resource! I think the videos would be a great way to introduce some fun subjects such as Light and Optics. I hope whatever school I teach at has a resource like this. I could see showing short clips and full length videos to students of all ages!
I think that this would be a great asset for the classroom and I also happy to hear that many schools are using it. This would be a great resource to use with students if you are addressing complicated topics and students need extra help. Not only would this be useful to students but there were also some great things to look at for a teacher. There are tons of lesson plans and quizes on there. I actually started looking around and thought the "Teaching Practices" section was helpful. You could improve your teaching skills and learn through this site, while also having a resource to students. I suggest checking out the segment titled "Helping the Explosive Child." This is a big issue in schools today and having some knowledge on dealing with these students can potentially keep a situation from going bad.
United Streaming is a very nice resource for classroom teachers. In our school district we do it a little different. Teachers are allowed to download and burn videos onto CD or DVD's or run them from the local computer. It's a great resource for those teachers. The one problem we have with the product is the bandwidth problems it can create. We allow individual schools to purchase United Streaming. The staff really seems to enjoy the services and opportunities it provides. Again we only will allow them to download them not constantly stream them over the internet. Overall it has been a success in our school district and would recommend it to other teachers.
