TECS290 Summer 2007-Cyndi Danner-Kuhn

Introduction to Instructional Technology

Teachers in the Trenches:

Please give us your take on Podcasts and can you tell us what your favorite Podcast is or are. In other words, which one(s) do you listen to regularly? I actually have about 10 I listen to all the time and a few others I do quite often. And am always looking for new one.

If you have a Podcast that you create, feel free to share the link to your Podcast so we can find it. My students are required to listen to three educational and technology related podcasts each week and reflect in our Moodle site. But ,your suggestions will give them some more options.

They also have to create a Podcast of their own, so if you have any ideas your can suggest what they could make their first podcast should be about, we would love it!!

And any resource you know about for making and posting Podcasts would be great. Sharing, don't ya just love it!! And thanks so much for helping me out with my students.

I started a book review podcasting project school wide this year. You can listen to student and teacher bookreviews on our podcasting Website. I have also put together a bunch of podcasting resources that you can use. If anyone creates a book review podcast and sends it to me, I will post it on our Website. Here is the link to our podcasts and our resources. http://www.runkle.org/Podcasts/index.html

I don't regularly listen to any educational podcasts, but I love NPR Fresh Air and This American Life podcasts, plus there are great podcasts for LOST, Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy. Sorry I can't provide more educational resources, but these are a lot of fun!

What I listen to most is not education Pod or video casts, but news, etc. I listen to NPR. As a teacher, it's impossible to listen during the day, because I'm teaching. I listen to FreshAir, Diane Rehm, and All Songs Considered evenings and weekends while I do tedious chores, like data entry, grading, or blog management.

I participate in Ed Tech Talk Weekly, and will be starting a new Webcast with Lisa Durff called It's Elementary (July 9, 2007) in the Ed Tech Talk media empire, http://edtechtalk.com. I highly recommend these shows for teachers at any point in their career who want to learn more and collaborate with others on technology.

If you like listening to podcasts (or watching video online), think about what makes it interesting and how you can use it in your class. That's how I got started. I loved to listen to podcasts, so it made me want to do it myself. Once you do that, it's easy. There is free software (Audacity, LAME encoder), cheap equipment (although you can pay more for quality) headphone mics start at under $10, portable MP3s with digital recorders for ~$40. Once you get that, you are READY to go! Then you just need to think, what do the kids find interesting (talking about themselves is always good), and what do you want them to learn. Next, do you want them to write first, or speak? If you have ELLs, you might want them talking without a script to start, just give them guidelines and good questions. Here are my podcasts http://nicholasfifth.edublogs.org/podcasts/ and some from Matt Horne: http://esltechnology.com/blog/ There are plenty of others out there too.
