TECS290 Summer 2007-Cyndi Danner-Kuhn

Introduction to Instructional Technology

Teachers from the Trenches

My students are learning about and beginning to set up their own Social Bookmarking site like del.icio.us or Portaportal, etc. If you have an opinion about social bookmarking or one to share, we would really appreciate taking advantage of your resources.

I have two, a del.icio.us site, that I basically use it for on the fly bookmarking then I move sites to my Portaportal so I can organize them better.

Thats the social bookmarking tool I am using for this class. Of course my computer has highlighted words all over it now. It seems there is a usefulness to social bookmarking. As you said, 'On the fly' bookmarking is useful. I have been browsing before and wanted to bookmark something and was on someone else's computer or what no, but now there is a way that i can log into an account and have bookmarks that are consistent! Yippee

I am really excited to start using this site. It seems for a long time now I have juggled things from my work computer to my home computer. It was such a hassle to get things to and from, but I think this will come in handy! Technology!!!!

Hi there!

I have chosen PortaPortal with the address: http://guest.portaportal.com/computertutor

As much as I know now about using computers, Social Networking, Podcasts, and even downloading music are all new to me because I have never needed to use them.

Although Delicious appears to be easy to use for linking, I like the idea that PortaPortal makes it easier to organize the links. If nothing else, it might force me to be a bit more organized myself!

I have just imported bookmarks from my school laptop, but still need to do this from my personal/business laptop. I have yet to figure out an easy way to move them from the "import" category to specific categories...

I wear several different hats in life; at school, at business, at church, and others. There are some links that might be appropriate for one category, but not to include in another... For example, "Humor". There are some things I think are funny, but might offend some of my business clients... I guess I will eventually have to set up several Social Networking sites...

Back to the network!

I chose to use del.icio.us at my social bookmarking portal. It loaded quickly on my computer and like the review said it isn't anything fancy. I like the fact that I can now load my favorite pages and have them all in one spot for easy maneuvering. My site is . I can see this being a great tool in the classroom. Students can simply visit a teacher's site and find the webpage they are to look at in a matter of minutes (if the technology is cooperating). I have already put a few pages on that I use on a regular basis, but I'm excited to add many more great resources to my bookmarks.

I chose del.icio.us for several reasons. I'm on the move a lot from building to building. I travel every now and then for training as well. Having one local for important technical or personal bookmarks is wonderful. I didn't know such a product existed, but now I do! It's great because I don't to lug around a laptop computer to every single destination. It gives me a little more freedom than before del.icio.us. I can really see using this at training and many other events where you don't get the option to use your own personal computer. I can now share bookmarks with other school officials and collogues about certain vendors that have very good products and are very useful in the school environment. I learned something today. I love it.

Wow, this was all so new to me. I had never been on iTunes before or even knew what a Podcast was. I had never heard of social bookmarking, but it seems all to perfect. After reading through the reviews, I thought del.cio.us would be best suited for me for the first time doing this. It loaded quickly for me and gave me a quick tutorial on how to use it. As I get more comfortable with this new technology I just discovered, I can see myself exploring and trying other social bookmarks.

This would be a great as a teacher. Just as we started this class and I have came across sites I would like to remember in the future, the only way I knew how to save them was to add them to "my favorites," which I discovered was not very convient this weekend. I went to visit my parents and was finishing some homework when I realized I didn't have the links I discovered earlier in the week becuase they were on my home computer. This will be great because I will be able to access any website I save at anytime.

This will be very important to me when I am looking for lesson plans, ideas, themes, and help. I can log onto my account and pull up any website I tagged previously.

I use portaportal and I like how I can organize all of my websites by content area. I have built quite a collection of science sites over the years and am still adding to the page. Since I began my grad program, I have been adding links for technology integration as well.

The link to my page is:

In addition to del.icio.us and portaportal, there are also other resources available:

I chose to use: del.icio.us, as my social bookmarking site. My site address is http://del.icio.us/kmkrinhop I chose del.icio.us because it looked simple and it wasn't anything fancy. I wanted something simple, because I am new to social bookmarking. I really like the thought of logging on to any computer and being able to access my favorite pages online! What a great idea! Social bookmarking will be helpful in many ways, it will be great if I need to access a web page from home and I don't have the url address. Also, it will be a nice perk if I want to show my students a website, all I will have to do is direct them to my del.icio.us website! I am excited to continue adding addresses to my del.icio.us account!

Hey! That is a really good idea about directing students to a website through your del.icio.us site. I hadn't thought of that!

I chose to use http://del.icio.us/karlisherwood as my bookmarking service. I am new to social bookmarking but it seems like a really great service that anybody can use. It can be extremely useful for teachers to use and to teach to their students. It seems like bookmarking sites saves a lot of time for the teacher. If they need to look for something it is all right their in one spot just a click away. Instead of having to search for it and go from there. I chose del.icio.us because it was very user friendly. I was able to register and start bookmarking with ease.
